This audio portrait features a conversation I had with my Nonna (grandmother), Mary. We discussed the topic of home and defined what home means to her. Mary was born in Italy and was only six years old when she moved to Canada. She explains that she finds a feeling of home by being with the people she cares about most in life, her family. Although she finds that Canada is more of her home than Italy, speaking Italian also provides her with a strong sense of home.

 

Additionally, eating Italian food as well as partaking in many Italian traditions, such as baking easter-basket-shaped desserts, contributes to a sense of home in her eyes. I chose to speak to my Nonna not only because I believe her to be a fantastic storyteller but because I was interested to understand what home means to an elderly immigrant who has had a very adventurous life.
